description: | The project consists of Historical and Political Science research. It has two main goals: 1) Research based on archival material and other primary sources (published documentation, media, interviews etc.). For the Cold War research the archives are gradually opening their holdings. At the moment the 30-years secrecy clause is generally being lifted from the documentation of the 1970s. However, in many cases even the more recent material is being made available for the researchers. The main interest of the project is focused on the development of the Baltic policies of Western states after the Second World War. According to the preliminary vision the project concentrates on the following questions: 1) how was the Baltic issue influenced by the changes in the US foreign political doctrines of the Cold War period (different forms of containment and détente)? 2) how did the attitude of European countries, especially that of the Nordic countries and the UK, develop towards the Baltic issue and how it was influenced by the US policy? 3) what was the role of international organisations in bringing the Baltic issue to the supranational level? 4) how effectively was the Soviet Union countering West's Baltic-policies? 2) The analysis of Baltic issue from the theoretical perspective in order to put it into the wider picture of the Cold War international context. The international relations, security and conflict theories will be used. An attempt will be made to target the Baltic issue not only through the traditional realist and geopolitical perspective but also by using the alternative approaches such as liberalism, functionalism, institutionalism, structuralism, constructivism, comparative analysis of the Cold War regional conflicts etc. The preliminary results of the project will be published in internationally indexed and pre-reviewed magazines Final results of the project will be published in a English-language set of articles. An attept will be made to find a recognised publisher outside of Estonia. |
