title: Effects of attention on the explicit perception of visual objects in the conditions of masking
reg no: ETF4967
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 5. Social Sciences
status: completed
institution: Law Institute
head of project: Talis Bachmann
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2003
description: This project aims at the empirically founded comparison of the attentional (cortical re-entrant) theory of masking developed by James Enns and Vincent DiLollo and the masking account that derives from T. Bachmann's perceptual retouch theory. The experiments will be set to test if it is sufficient to use the proactive thalamic mechanism suggested in the theory of retouch in order to explain the effects of substitution and acceleration in the attentional facilitation of object-specific information or is it necessary -- in order to effect this type of facilitation and conscious explication -- to invoke the mechanism of re-entrant processing between the cortical representational levels. As a result of research more clarity will be brought into the existing theories of masking and the role and mechanisms of attention in conscious perception will be specified. The results will be published in international peer-reviewed journals.
