title: Estonia on the Way to the European Union. Identity Changes in 1998-2003
reg no: ETF4971
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 5.3. Sociology
status: completed
institution: The Institute for European Studies
head of project: Aksel Kirch
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2003
description: This project is an attempt to compare changes in people collective self-identity taken place during last decade in Estonia in the context of integration with European Union. First empirical study of Estonian national and ethnic identity was carried out in 1993 and special study of Estonian students in 2000 (both projects financed by Estonian Scientific Foundation). The process of identity change will be studied on the sociological and social-psychological levels. Data about shift of national and ethnic identity will be gathered by Identity Structure Analysis Test (elaborated by Prof. of Ulster University Peter Weinreich, and used already in former studies). These data will be supplemented by sociological data gathered by comparative study of people time-use and culture consumption in East-European states (secondary analysis of the database) and by discourse analysis of significant texts of prominent politicians and humanitarians.
Results of the 1993 study are published in: "Changing Identities in Estonia. Sociological Facts and Commentaries" (eds Marika Kirch, David Laitin), Tallinn, 1994, Estonian Science Foundation, Institute of International and Social Studies). Results of the 2000 project are summarised in the article "Estonian and Polish Students' Group Identity Dynamics in the EU Integration Process", will be published in December 2001 in journal "Trames". Results are used also in paper of Aksel Kirch, Einar Rull and Tarmo Tuisk presented to the 5-th European Sociological Association Congress (Helsinki, August 2001). Results are used in the article of Marika Kirch "Estonian and European Identity" wrote in August 2001 for collective publication "Cross-cultural Communication" (initiated by European College of Tartu University). Results of this designed comparative study (1993-2003) will be published in special issue of Trames (journal of University of Tartu and Estonian Academy of Science).
