title: Role of gene and genome mutations in speciation of sibling species in Pezizales (Fungi).
reg no: ETF4989
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.13. Botany
status: completed
institution: Institute of Zoology and Botany at Estonian University of Life Sciences
head of project: Bellis Kullman
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2005
description: In the proposed project, morphological characteristics, ribosomal DNA sequence, genome DNA content and ploidy levels based on it will be determined in selected sibling species groups in Peziza and Neotiella and related genera of the Pezizales to distinguish among the species and to compare genetic relationships of these groups presumably with different mechanisms of speciation.
The species of one group comprising sibling species from the genus Peziza, have the same, third, ploidy level. For the species of the other group, sibling species from the genus Neottiella, highly variable ploidy levels as well as spore heteroploidy have been established. It is supposed that if among the species of the other group, ploidy (genome mutation) related speciation is prevalent, then they reveal less, if any, differences in the DNA sequence (gene mutations) compared with the species of the first group.
