description: Within the theory of Rotationally Anisotropic Turbulence the model of planetary zonal motion of longitudinally homogeneous, constant depth ocean is formulated by Jaak Heinloo, "The effects of antisymmetric stresses II: planetary zonal flows", 2001 (manuscript). The Drake Passage between the South America and the Antarctic Peninsula is a most pronounced constriction that limits the zonal flow in the Southern Ocean. The research work deals with the effects of the antisymmetric stresses that give rise to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, which volume flux depends from the topographic constriction of the Drake Passage. The project focus on following problems:
1) On basis of the density field data collected from the Atlantic, the Indian and the Pacific oceans, and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current velocity fields and volume transports estimates investigate applicability of the model of planetary zonal motion.
2) Investigate topographic effect of the Drakes Passage in formation of the zonal flow velocity field variation, and the density contrast between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.
Expected result of the project is preparation of the manuscript by Janek Laanearu and Jaak Heinloo, "Internal driving mechanisms of Antarctic Circumpolar Current" for international publication.
