reg no: ETF5012
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant

duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2004
description: Diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis constitute a problem to healthcare because of their high prevalence in many populations. The progression of osteoporosis speeds up after menopause. Many uncertainties exist in the relationship between NIDDM, menopause and osteoporosis.

The aims of the study are:
1. To compare the prevalence of osteoporosis between the postmenopausal NIDDM and control women.
2. To study the predictors of bone mineral density in NIDDM women.
3. To determine the age of menopause in NIDDM women compared to non-diabetic controls.
4. To study the predictors of the age of menopause in NIDDM.

Expected results:
Establishment the predictors of bone mineral density in NIDDM patients will permit to compile recommendations for NIDDM patients how to slow the development of osteoporosis, and hopefully reduce the number of osteoporotic fractures. Factors predicting the age of menopause in NIDDM patients will be clarified.
