title: Nonradiative and radiative decay of X-ray excitations in solids, films and molecules
reg no: ETF5024
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.3. Physics
status: completed
institution: Institute of Physics at University of Tartu
head of project: Arvo Kikas
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2004
description: The main goal of this project is the understanding of the decay processes of the soft-X-ray induced core excitations and the investigation of the electronic structure of solids through the decay channels of soft-X-ray induced core excitations. Among the objects of study are the technologically important rare-earth and transition metal compounds as well as the ionic solids and their vapours as simplest model systems. For these the synchrotron radiation excited resonant photoemission and Auger spectroscopy, resonantly excited X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and the time-of-fligth mass spectroscopy will be used. For the interpretation of results theoretical calculations will be carried out.
In particular, the study will concentrate to the following topics:
- The 3d-resonant electron emission will be used for study electronic structure of early rare-earth (Pr, Nd)
compounds and the interference effects in resonant photoemission spectra of La and Cs compounds
at 3d excitations;
- The 2p-resonant photoemission will be used for the study of the electronic structure of the
transition metal dihalogenides;
- Resonantly excited X-ray fluorescence will be used for the interpretation of the nature of
1s photoabsorption in fluorides and 3d photoabsorption in salts of caesium.
- The formation of the solid-state effects will be studied by the comparison of the resonant
photoemission spectra of the molecules, thin films and solids;
- The fragmentation of alkaly halide molecules by the synchrotron radiation will be studied by
time-of-fligth mass spectroscopy.
