title: String theory, brane cosmology, and the problem of time
reg no: ETF5026
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.3. Physics
status: completed
institution: Institute of Physics at University of Tartu
head of project: Piret Kuusk
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2005
description:
The first models of brane cosmology were proposed by Randall and Sundrum in 1999. They are inspired by string theory, but contain only a half of the corresponding gravitational multiplet, a metric tensor, ignoring the other half, a scalar dilaton field. We are going to investigate different possibilities to incorporate the scalar dilaton field into the Randall-Sundrum action functional and to calculate physical properties of ensuing models - occurrence of inflationary expansion, its parameters and their naturalness, etc. For explaining the current acceleration of the Universe, different action funcionals for gravitational and mattar fields in brane and bulk space will be considered and corresponding processes calculated.
