title: Electron emission and corona discharge from metal-dielectric systems
reg no: ETF5028
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.3. Physics
status: completed
institution: Institute of Physics at University of Tartu
head of project: Henn Käämbre
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2004
description: The purpose of the work is to elucidate
1) the effect of thin dielectric films (eg TiO2, Ta2O5, HfO2), deposited upon the surface of metallic electrodes, on the photoelectron and field emission from the electrodes;
2) the influence of the electron emission variations, caused by the films, upon the negative corona discharge from the oxide-coated metal electrodes.
The expected results are:
- description of the effect of the parameters of the dielectric films (thickness, preparation regimes etc) and the morphology of the layer surfaces upon the electron emission from the substrate and/or from the film;
- elucidation of the effects of the ambience (vacuum at different pressures, gas environment) on the electron emission;
- recording of the dependences of photoemission and photoinduced field emission on the light wavelengths;
- elucidation of the joint effect of light and electric field upon the electron emission from the metal-oxide film systems;
- finding of the appearing conditions of exoemission from the thin film sandwiches.
The anticipated results should present some interest for creators of new cold cathodes for vacuum electronic devices and at the attempts to construct new sensitive (at the ppm concentration level) detectors for trace impurities in the gases.
