description: This study represents an attempt to present a survey of one of the most important periods in modern Estonian history as set against its wider international context. Chronologically, it covers the decades of the first half of the 20th century, the period stretching from the first Russian revolution (1905) and declaration of independence (1918) to the outbreak of the Second World War and Soviet occupation (1939 to 1940).
The main task of this research programm is to examine images and mutual perceptions of the Estonians and external world (German, British, Russian, Nordic, Baltic).
The key aspects have been: 1) Formation of the national and regional identity in the beginning of 20th century and in the era of national independence; 2) Estonia in the geopolitical and cultural space of the Baltic Sea Region; 3) Great powers (Soviet Union, Germany, England) influences on the internal and external politics of the Baltic states.
The results of this study will be monographs, articles, papers, lectures, data bases, collections of documents.
