description:
Rapid aging of Estonian society has raised the questions of granting well-being and quality of life to elderly people as well as using their potential more effectively. There have been several studies of elderly population carried out in Estonia in recent years, but they have omitted the pre-pension period.
The aim of the study is to analyse the problems of adaptation and social adjustment of 55 - 65 years old in the period of transition of Estonia to the society of information technology. At the same time the study aims to highlight differences and similarities within the group of the age interval. Main questions considered are (1) practical organisation of life and coping strategy of 55 - 65 years old people in the conditions of rapid changes of information society, (2) changes in their values and activity of life, (3) the role of social network and social support at different stages of life, (4) the influence of working and/or forced retirement on attitudes and self-esteem of people, (5) adaptation to the situation at different stages of development of Estonian society in the years 1993 - 1998.

The results of the research project should be interesting from theoretical point of view, but specialists dealing with problems of elderly people and legislative bodies can also make use of them.
