description: | Organised crime has significant negative impact on the formation of social capital and possibilities for the development of democratic society. Organised crime in conjunction with corruption forms a threat to Estonian internal security, state of law, and damages its international reputation. The aim of the presented project is to give a description of organised crime in Estonia in complex. The description will include the analysis of organised crime activities, its influence on social realm, public opinion, and international credibility. This analysis will serve as a scientific basis for proposed organised crime prevention program. During the first stage of the project the results and methods of existing research will be summarised. In addition to this, the original research based on official crime statistics, quantitative analysis of mass media and other publications will be carried out. During the second stage of the project empirical research will be conducted. The research includes expert interviews and a survey. Experts interviewed for the study are law enforcement officials involved in organised crime control. The survey is designed to study public attitudes, general knowledge about the subject, and contacts with the area of organised crime activities. The third stage is intended to summarise findings of the research, to work up recommendations for the crime prevention policy, and prepare a monograph for publication. The results of the study will be published on regular basis, presented at local and international seminars, and forwarded to the practitioners. The comprehensive analysis-based picture of organised crime in Estonia is necessary to adequately evaluate the social situation in the country. Using research data doctoral thesis "Presentation of Organised Crime in Estonian Media" will be prepared by Anna Markina. |
