title: Contemporary Folklore Theory: processes, myths, attitudes, globalisation versus locality
reg no: ETF5117
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 6.4. Folklore
status: completed
institution: Estonian Literary Museum
head of project: Mare Kõiva
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2005
description: The academic aim of the current project is to study problems actual in contemporary folklore, including the structure, functions, functioning and distribution strategies of mythological and virtual heritage. The practical outcome of the project are studies on and an archive of e-folklore and contemporary heritage. Considering the fact that there is no representative collection of material about the period 1950-1987 and Estonia's independence, it is vital to create an archive of e-folklore and contemporary heritage.
As in the first case we are dealing with the folklore from a closed, stagnated and authoritarian society, and in the second case the folklore of a society suddenly directed towards openness and partial to the influences of globalisation, the collected material is ideal for giving a cross-section overview of certain general working mechanisms and problems concerning the local unique features of folklore from these periods.
Research results will be published in articles and monographs, open round tables on migration, the marginal, contemporary myths and narratives as well as the relations of the local and global and its expressions.
The project's practical aim is to ensure the continued publication of academic folklore journals "Folklore" and "Mäetagused" and is also connected with preparations for the 2005 International Soceity for Narrative Research (ISFNR) 14th annual congress (in Tartu).
