title: Application of acoustic analysis of sound in ethnomusicology
reg no: ETF5118
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 6.5. Art history and criticism
status: completed
institution: Estonian Literary Museum
head of project: Triinu Ojamaa
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2005
description: Contemporary ethnomusicology deals with surface-level studies mostly, describing genre systems, functions, performance traditions etc. The aim of the current project is to move the focus of the studies to the deeper levels, to find explanations to the processes beyond the music. The studies covered by our five-member team are in following: 1) the real scales used in traditional music; 2) the qualitative features of sound in traditional vocal music; 3) the interaction of music and language. The problems to be solved are as follows:

What are the differences between theoretical tunings and real tunings in Estonian folk music?
What are the qualitative features of sound that build up the basis of identification a piece of music as belonging to one or another nation or ethnic group?
What is the real role of scansion in runosong?
What are these factors which have influence upon the formation of musical stress in folk songs?

Solving the problems is possible only by using tools created for acousic analysis, obtaining of which is one of the aims of planned Project..

The preliminary results of the research are planned to present on an international symposium "Methods of Musical Acoustics in Ethnomusicology" that will be organized on the third year of the Project. By the end of the fourth year a collection of articles is planned to publish that will include studies from reseachers from other countries (Lithuania, Poland, Finland, Hungary) as well. The project has great potential to become basis of a larger international cooperation project in the future.
