This project was centered around one complex of ideas and its expression in Estonian music, the proposed project will study different aspects of musical life. From among several topics that have been overlooked in earlier historical research or left aside because of some ideological restrictions in Soviet times we have planned to include in the present project a study of the history of German theatre in Tallinn, the history of broadcastingin Estonia, particularly its role in distributing serious music, the musical activities of local societies, the engagement of musicians in folkloristic field work, collecting and transcribing folk melodies - the last topics will be studied using the archives of Cyrillus Kreek at the Museum of Theatre and Music. The results of the project will be published as a collection of articles in the series "Publications in the History of Estonian Music". The wider goal of the project is to prepare the new academic version of the history of Estonian music that has to be written in the future.
