title: Mobiliy of priority pollutants in contaminated waste deposits of Northeastern Estonia.
reg no: ETF5130
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.6-1.9. Chemistry and Molecular Biology
2.14. Environmental Engineering
status: completed
institution: Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics
head of project: Uuve Kirso
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2004
description: The objective of the study is to investigate the colloidal transport of hazardous technogenic pollutants (polycyclic aromatic compounds, heavy metals) in waste deposits of oil shale processing and energy production in Estonia. The parent solid wastes are deposited in terricones (limestone gangues mounds), semi-coke mounds and ash dumps. For evaluation of the potential environmental impact of priority pollutants the knowledge of main factors driving the leaching into ground- and surface water system is important. The estimation of bioavailability of pollutants is also essential for follow up investigation, e.g., to propose the convenient and cost-effective methods for the utilization the solid wastes and remediation of contaminated sites. Besides the aged wastes the fresh material is also planned to study especially connected to technical renovation of oil shale industry.
