title: Mechanisms of Biological Interaction of the EMF
reg no: ETF5143
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 2.13. Biomedical Engineering
status: completed
institution: Tallinn Technical University
head of project: Hiie Hinrikus
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2005
description: The final objective of the study is to develop equipment for affecting nervous system by external electromagnetic field (EMF). To achieve this objective the mechanisms of EMF and nervous system interaction should be clarified. This application is aimed to develop theory of the EMF biological interaction and clarify possible mechanisms of the EMF effects. Different possible physical interaction processes between external and bioelectromagnetic fields as well as analogy with technical principles will be used as a base for development theory of the mechanism. The methods of electrodynamics and numerical modelling will be applied to derive adequate theoretical models for EMF biological effects. The theoretical physical approach should take into account a specific character of the EMF interaction (windows effect etc.).
As a result the knowledge about EMF effects mechanisms and most effective parameters of the radiation to affect nervous system will be achieved.
This knowledge is important for application in
- new medical technology to introduce new principles in diagnostics and treatment;
- electromagnetic environment to estimate non-ionising radiation (including cellular phones) effects on human health.
