title: Tactile perception of optical images
reg no: ETF5150
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 2.10. Mechanical Engineering
status: completed
institution: Tallinn Technical University
head of project: Arvi Kruusing
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2004
description: The objective of the project is to solve the scientific problems of creating of an inexpensive lightweight portable aid for people with serious visual impairment to percept by fingers the same optical images in the same milieu that non-disabled people see by their eyes.

The seeing aid will comprise a TV camera for aquisition of the image information and mechanostimulators at fingertips of the user for sensing the visual field. The intensity of the stimulation will correspond to the intensity of light coming from the direction of fingers or to the distance to the surrounding objects.

The goal of the project will be achieved via development of new polymer and magnetic actuators for mechanostimulators, and by solving the new mathematical and information-technological problems of optimal processing and storage of the information from TV cameras and from position sensors at fingers; in situation of both moving scene and moving cameras.
