title: Neugrund impact structure and its influence to Early Palaeozoic sedimentary basin
reg no: ETF5192
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.10. Geology
status: completed
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Leho Ainsaar
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2004
description: The project is aimed at complex mineralogical, sedimentological, palaeontological and geophysical investigation of the Early Palaeozoic Neugrund Impact Structure (NIS) and its vicinity. Main objectives are (1) testing a new hypothesis on age of NIS (540 Ma), (2) establishing the structure and extent of NIS, (3) explain the impact process and compare the results to other craters and (4) explain the burial history of the impact structure, its influence to the geological development of the area and to the evolution of life in the Cambrian and Ordovician seas. The relatively thin sedimentary cover and rich fossil assemblages, in association with a very detailed stratigraphical framework create an excellent basis for such investigations. Two PhD students are involved in this project.
