description: | This project deals with the history of theological thinking in Estonia, from its inception to today. The project is based on the geographical rather than ethnical principle, thus examining the development of theological thinking among the people who have lived on the territory of the present day Estonia. This implies, first and foremost, the ideas of theologians of Estonian and German nationality. One of the main objectives of the project is to discover a supranational continuum in the local theology (or to prove its non-existence). Can we speak about a specifically Estonian theology, a fruit of original thinking, or is the local theology merely a product of foreign influences? What is the place of the theology developed in Estonia on the broader scale of universal theology, as well as of the history of science? The project has no pretentions to becoming a final, all-encompassing survey of Estonian theology. Rather, it aims at building a framework for further, more detailed research, since it is essentially a pilot project in this field. Within the project, the topics of research have been distributed to the principal investigators in accordance with their interests, which enables in-depth analysis of only certain aspects of (and certain ideologists in) the history of theological thinking in Estonia. Nevertheless, we hope, through the involvement of students in the project, to render the project a broader scope than just individual studies of certain theologians. Among other things, the project is to result in a survey of the most important periods in Estonian theology. The treatment of theology as part of the history of Estonian thinking provides valuable opportunities for comparison with other trends in the history of local thinking and science. In the last year of the project, the findings of the research will be summarized in the form of conference reports. The reports, in their turn, will later be concentrated into a collection. Intermediary findings will be publicized by the investigators in the form of scientific and popular-scientific articles as well as reports for scientific conferences. .. |
