title: Performance Analysis: Methods and Applications
reg no: ETF5201
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 6.7. Literary Science
status: completed
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Luule Epner
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2004
description: The goal of the project is to investigate relationships of dramatic texts and semiotically polyphonic theatrical performance (as a text) from the theoretical point of view, resting on the analysis of significant productions of Estonian theatre in the 1990s and at the beginning of the 21th century. The project consists of following steps: a) critical analysis of available methods of performance analysis, that are based on semiotics, reception theory, vectorial analysis, theory of fictional worlds, etc; b) testing, developing and/or synthesising of analysis methods applying theoretical models on research material from Estonian culture; c) investigation of functioning of the communication chain (text - performance - receiver) in the socio-cultural context; research concentrates on inner theatricality of literary texts, on poetics of productions, on various problems in audience reception; d) analysing several important productions in Estonian theatre. There are two groups of productions treated as the object of research: a) productions based on Madis Kõiv's texts; b) Mati Unt's so-called authorial productions. In both cases are relations between literary text and production extraordinarily tense, but in different way.
In the framework of the project a symposium on problems of performance analysis will be organised. As a result of research, a collection of articles "Performance Analysis" including theoretical articles and interpretations of productions will be published.
