description: The project "A Typological Grammar of Estonian: Syntax" aims at compiling the syntax part of a new Estonian grammar, which is intended first and foremost for the international linguistic community. The main differences between the new syntax and the Academic Grammar of Estonian (EKG) are as follows: a) it is a functional typological grammar and is intended not only for Estonian linguists (will be published both in English and Estonian); (b) the conceptual system is in line with the terminology used in international typological descriptions; (c) it is corpus-based ( text corpora of the University of Tartu); (d) it includes data about the major sublanguages of the written language; (e) it includes data about spoken usage; (f) it avoids unnecessary details but at the same time fills some gaps in the Academic Grammar of Estonian; (g) it shows the major changes in Standard Estonian during the 20th century (since 1890). The applied grant is intended for working out the grammatical conception and studying the syntactic problems that need attention (incl. word order, structure of the noun phrase, grammaticalization of the verb, so that it will allow to write a book on syntax in two years). The research results will be published as articles and books.
