title: Hepatitis C molecularbiological and hepatitis A molecularepidemiological investigation in Estonia
reg no: ETF5228
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 3. Medical Sciences
status: completed
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Tõnu Krispin
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2004
description: The aim of this study is to determine for chronic C hepatitis patients the profile of antibodies against linear and conformational epitopes of viral structural and nonstructural proteins (C, E1, E2, p7, NS2, NS3, NS4A, NS4B, NS5A, NS5B). These investigations will be carried out comparatively on the patients of various degrees of severity of hepatitis, and also during interferon therapy (in dynamics).
The aim of this study is also genotyping of hepatitis A virus strains in Estonia (isolated from 1995 to this time)
Probable results: determination of profile of antibodies makes possible to elaborate criteria for estimating severity if illness, effectivity of interferon therapy and possibilities for nucleic acid vaccinations in future.
Genotyping of hepatitis A virus makes possible to study distribution of this virus genotypes in Estonia in the last period of time.
