title: On the multiple constitution of the Estonian counties: a spatio-conceptual approach
reg no: ETF5231
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 5.8. Human, Social and Economical Geography
status: completed
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Ott Kurs
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2003
description: The project proposes specific theoretical approach for the investigations of the social. The multiple characters of the Estonian counties are studied by using distinct spatial conceptualisations as the leading threads of the empirical investigations. Three separate provincial investigations are carried out each using different constellations of spatial concepts as the predefined understandings of the counties. Each sub-study has its own combination of methods, according to their appropriateness in relation to the defined spatiality.
The research project has threefold aim:
1) to elaborate the spatio-conceptual approach to the empirical research of the social realities and test the work of multiple analysis based on the different pre-concepts of the space
2) to demonstrate the qualitatively different realities of Estonian counties for humans living there
3) to propose alternative discourses for the provincial institutional agents by explicating the dominative and taken for granted nationalized knowledges on provinces.
