reg no: ETF5272
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant

duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2003
description: The objective of this study is to gather didactic and IT data that would allow to create Intelligent Tutoring environments based on computer algebra systems for solving expression manipulation tasks (simplification, solution of equations and equation systems, differentiation, integration, etc.). Such environments allow the student to solve the exercises step by step while receiving feedback and prompts. In preparing the problems the teacher can thus predetermine the level of detail of the solutions to be produced by students as well as the division of work between the student and the computer.

The following subgoals are set in this study:
1. Selecting a number of problems important from the perspective of mathematical education. Identifying from the solution algorithms of the problems sets of elementary steps with different levels of detail, which constitute menus in the future environments.
2. Analyzing typical mistakes made by, as well as particular help needed by, students to devise schemes for diagnosing mistakes and providing prompts.
3. Testing the ability and correctness of computer algebra systems in solving both the entire problems and the individual elementary steps. Assessing the suitability of basic computer algebra systems for solving the problems. Formulating proposals for improving the systems.
4. Preparing a project of Intelligent Tutoring environment based on a computer algebra system having a suitable set of commands.
