title: Sequence stratigraphic aspects in distribution of Estonian Lower Silurian brachiopods, ostracodes, corals and molluscs
reg no: ETF5290
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.10. Geology
status: completed
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Madis Rubel
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2004
description: The project integrate the results of sequence stratigraphic analysis and evolutionary paleontology. Existing and new data from the Silurian sections of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will be processed.

The groups of organisms (fossils) studied will be used to examine several hypotheses concerning evolutionary patterns:

1) the existence and role of deep and shallow water faunas and their general development (for example, deep water faunas may be less affected by sea level changes than are shallow water faunas),

2) differing ranges of the same species in differing facies may provide insight into how species survive crises such as climate change or sea level change,

3) patterns through time in corresponding facies belts will provide information on the stability of communities during Ecological Evolutionary and during times of environmental change.

The PhD and MSc student are evolved in this project.
