title: ANTIBIOTICS AND EXIT OF THE NASCENT PEPTIDE FROM RIBOSOME
reg no: ETF5311
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.8. Molecular Biology
status: completed
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Tanel Tenson
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2005
description: The studies on antibiotics are necessary to fight the increasing amount of antibiotic resistance. Macrolides are a widely used group of antibiotics. Their mechanism of action is not well understood. Similarly, several phenomena of macrolide resistance are obscure.
The main aims of current project are:

1) To understand the molecular mechanism of action of macrolide antibiotics.
2) To describe the molecular mechanism of peptide mediated macrolide resistance.
3) To describe the molecular mechanism of translational attenuation regulating the operons responsible for macrolide resistance.

Macrolides are affecting exit of the nascent peptide from ribosome. Understanding the mechanism of action of macrolides will provide new insite into the nascent peptide - ribosome interactions.
In addition, the new information could help in designing new antibiotics.
