title: The Mesolith of Central and Southwest Estonia
reg no: ETF5328
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 6.1. History (incl. Archeology)
status: completed
institution: University of Tartu
head of project: Aivar Kriiska
duration: 01.01.2002 - 31.12.2005
description: The aim of the project is to specify the formation of settlement in the
basin of River Pärnu, and in the Võrtsjärve lowland; as well as the main
ways of the development of the settlement, and the connection between the
development in the two regions. To achieve this, the existing data
(archaeological inventory, exact information about the antiquities,
various analyses by methods of natural sciences, radiocarbon datings) will
be thoroughly studied, as well as the new data gathered in course of
archaeological field works. The area under study is unquestionably among
the best in Estonia for studying the Mesolithic, as dozens of antiquities
have already been found, and numerous stray finds as well. The project
will produce not only knowledge of local history, but also interpretations
of the past, important for the prehistory of Estonia, and most likely even
the whole region of the Baltic rim. Many articles dedicated to the study,
and a Master's theses about mesolithic bone and antler artefacts gathered
from the lower reaches of River Pärnu, will serve as the outcome of the
project.
