description: Advanced measurements of thickness of the stratospheric ozone layer (total ozone) and the UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface are proposed to be developed. The corresponding database will be formed and analyzed. The well-known negative correlation between the ground-level UV radiation and atmospheric total ozone is distorted by factors determining the optical state of the atmosphere. A special study of the influence of these factors (cloudiness, tropospheric ozone, aerosol, ground albedo) on the UV irradiance and dose is planned. The UV spectroradiometry is introduced apart from the broadband and narrowband UV measurements. The reliability of recorded spectra is quaranteed by using the certificated standard sources and the existing laboratory equipment. Establishment of more exact relationships between the UV radiation and cloudiness characteristics is expected. The results of NASA Sun-photometer (located at Tõravere) measurements of aerosol optical thickness are used for detection of the aerosol contribution in the attenuation of UV radiation.
The estimation of UV dose for past years back to 1955 is made and the influence of cyclic climate change on the UV dose analyzed.
A database on Estonian UV radiation (measured and estimated) is composed for further studies of health and biospheric effects. Together with the EMHI the TO group is responsible for the total ozone and solar UV irradiance part of the Estonian environmental monitoring.
