title: Life and Production of the Goldsmith Joseph Kopf
reg no: ETF5350
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 6. Humanities
status: completed
institution: Art Museum of Estonia
head of project: Anu Mänd
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2004
description: The goal of this project is to introduce to the wider audience the most celebrated Estonian goldsmith of the 20th century - Joseph Kopf (1867-1930). J. Kopf founded his goldsmith company in Tallinn in 1891, and after a couple of decades he had more than 100 employees. The flourishing times for his company were the first decades of the 20th century and the period of the Estonian Republic. His most famous masterpieces include presents to the family of the Russian Tsar (e.g. the silver portrait of prince Aleksey), to the King of Sweden and the King of England, as well as the presidential chain for Konstantin Päts, the first President of Estonia. After World War II, Kopf's goldsmith company was transformed into the metalworking factory "ARS".

Unfortunately, all monographs on Estonian silver (Vende 1967, Leistikow 1996, Kirme 2000) end with the 19th century, and do not, consequently, include the production of Joseph Kopf. The aim of this project is to fill this gap.

The scientific outcome of this project is twofold:
1) An exhibition about the goldsmiths' works by Joseph Kopf from September until December 2004 in St. Nicholas' church in Tallinn (curator Anu Mänd). The objects will be gathered from the Art Museum of Estonia, the Tallinn City Museum, the Estonian National Museum, as well as from Sweden, Germany, Latvia, and Russia.
2) A monography about the life and production of Joseph Kopf, which also includes a catalogue of Kopf's works. Authors of the book: Kaalu Kirme, Anu Mänd. Since there is a great interest towards Kopf's goldsmiths' works also outside Estonia, the book will be bilingual: Estonian and English.
