description: Until now research of old believers was fragmentary. Their traditions and customaries were covered mainly in popular scientific manner and were based on oral traditions. Goals for this project are following:
1) Discover and classify archives materials, concerning old believers, which will give an opportunity for grant participants and other researchers to continue research of given thematic, relying on archives sources. Because of this it is intended to research following archives:
a) Estonian History Archives (Tartu) - here are located documents concerning old believers in 18-20th centuries; b) Estonian State Archives (Tallinn) - here are located documents concerning old believers in 20th century; c) Latvian History Archives (Riga)
2) Discover materials concerning problems of old believers in Estonia in Russian literature and publicise in 19-20th centuries.
3) Expand existing materials with "oral stories", by recording memories of modern Old Believers to a tape recorder.
4) Research the history and culture of Estonian Old Believers in 19-20th centuries.
5) With cooperation in University of Tartu and Estonian old believers union organize a seminar in Tartu on old believer's subject. And also participate on seminars and conferences with similar subjects outside Estonia.
6) The final goal of the project is to assemble a collection "Russian old believers in Estonia in historical and cultural contexts" consisting of two parts: a) publication of archives documents with Estonian translations and comments; b) scientific articles.
