description: | Main objectives of the projekt are: 1. Specification of the role of ion-induced nucleation in the generation of secondary aerosol particles in the atmosphere, using the statistical analysis of the data of synchronised measurement of aerosol particle size spectrum and air ion mobility spectrum, and theoretical modelling of nucleation processes. 2. Assessment of the charge distribution of atmospheric aerosol particles depending on the intensity of the particle generation processes and on the rate of the spectrum transformation for the specification of the mathematical models for derivation of the size spectrum of aerosol particles from the mobility spectrum of air ions. 3. Linking of the physically motivated classification of air ions with the objectively existing size classes (modes) of the atmospheric aerosol particles. 4. Investigation of the dependence of the size spectrum of atmospheric aerosol on the origin of air mass and on the values of meteorological parameters in this air mass, especially for remote locations of Estonia. 5. Specification of the spectral optical properties of atmospheric aerosol and of their temporal variability, for assessment of the effect of aerosol on the regional photobiological doses and of the parameters of aerosol correction necessary by remote sensing and by modelling of radiation transfer. 6. Formation of the database of the measurement data of atmospheric aerosol size spectra for Estonia. For achievement of these objectives, the upgrading of unique self-made apparatus and development of some new technique is necessary (in cooperation with some other financial sources). Achievment of these objectives enables better to understand the mechanisms of generation of aerosol particles as a wheather influencing factor, the origin of the particulate air pollution of Estonia and the effect of aerosol on the solar radiation. Practical results of the project could be: accessible via Internet database of aerosol spectra for Estonia, development of some devices suitable for production by Estonian industry, and extension of the international scientific cooperation of the University of Tartu. |
