title: Who's who in medieval Tallinn
reg no: ETF5401
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 6. Humanities
status: accepted
institution: Tallinn Town Archives
head of project: Tiina Kala
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2006
description: The project has two major goals:
1. To create a prosopographical database of the inhabitants of medieval Tallinn (from the 13th to the mid-16th century).
2. To publish books and articles on the basis of the analysis of the database.
Prosopography, which can be defined as a collective biography of a particular social group, an association, or any other kind of group of people, is a comparatively novel trend in historical research that has become fashionable during the last two decades. In western Europe, there exist several monographs based on the prosopographical methods; however, in Estonia this methodology has thus far been used only by single historians.
Thanks to the extraordinarily rich sources in the Tallinn City Archives, data on the medieval inhabitants of Tallinn offer very good opportunities for a prosopographical analysis. The database, which will be created in the course of this project, will become a valuable research tool for historians and demographers, both in Estonia as well as in other countries. Books and articles based on this database, will fill many gaps in the history of medieval Tallinn and will thoroughly investigate individual social groups.
The data to be put into database originates mainly from unpublished archival sources as well as from edited sources (mostly publications of the Tallinn City Archives from before World War II).
The goals in the first year of the project are:
1. To create a model for the database relying on the international experience and taking into account the idiosyncracies of the surviving source material.
2. To gather data in the archives of Estonia and in other countries.
3. Data input.
4. To digitalize relevant source material.
