title: The System and Use of Estonian Verbal Nouns Against the Background of Neighbouring Languages
reg no: ETF5408
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 6. Humanities
status: accepted
institution: Institute of Estonian Language
head of project: Iris Metsmägi
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2006
description: The main aim of the research is to find out similarities and differences of the system and area of use of Estonian verbal nouns (participles, infinitives, agent noun, action noun) in comparison with the systems and use of respective verbal nouns both in Uralic and non-Uralic neighbouring languages. Estonian verbal nouns are formed by typically Uralic suffixes, however, it is supposed that in their use and in the system, made up by them, both characteristically Uralic and non-Uralic features can be found. As a result of the research the features can be specified, likewise, it is possible to make generalisations about the nature of contact influences, on the one hand, and the historical development of the Estonian language, on the other.
