title: PREPARTUM AND POSTPARTUM FEEDING OF DAIRY COWS
reg no: ETF5419
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 4. Agricultural Sciences
status: accepted
institution: Institute of Animal Husbandry at EAU
head of project: Olav Kärt
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2006
description: The main objective of the project is to study the problems related to prepartum and postpartum nutrition of dairy cows. Research will be focused particularly on determining the most appropriate energy and protein sources as well as their optimum ratio in diets to shorten the period of postpartum negative energy balance, thus reducing the incidence of metabolic disorders after calving, and improving the fertility and productivity of dairy cows.

Another objective is to work out recommendations, based on feeds currently used in Estonia, for prepartum and postpartum nutrition of dairy cows of the breeds being raised in Estonia.

In the course of the project realization we will also try to find out the best ways for feeding management before and after calving, i.e. during one of the most complicated periods of reproductive cycle of dairy cows. The research results will be applied in dairy production units to increase their economic efficiency and to improve health and welfare of cows..
