title: Lipid reservs mobilisation in dairy cows during the period of negative energy balance and factors affecting it
reg no: ETF5422
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 4. Agricultural Sciences
status: accepted
institution: Institute of Animal Husbandry at EAU
head of project: Katri Ling
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2006
description:
To clarify the influence of breed, genetic merit, parity and the amount of lipid reserves on the character of negative energy balance of dairy cows (nadir and duration) and hence on the dynamics of the indices characterizing lipid mobilisation. To find the energetic and weight-change value of one BCS point in Estonian cow breeds. To clarify the influence of feeding and intake, especially using different glucogenic precursors on lipid mobilisation. To identify risk factors of fatty liver and its influence on the following lactation and reproduction. To find out relations of lipid mobilisations to fertility parameters. To verify the role of insulin resistance in regulating lipid mobilisation in dairy cows.

The results help to improve our understanding about the relations between nutritional physiology and metabolism of cattle and ascertain adaptations of different Estonian cow breeds to negative energy balance. They add knowledge on regulatory role of insulin resistance and glycogenic precursors on lipid mobilisation. The project improves knowledge on fatty liver risk factors and the relations between nutritional physiology and reproduction in cattle. It expands knowledge on bovine organism functioning and finds ways to support it by external factors; gives better presumptions for more effective use of genetic potential of different breeds which is basis for more economical production.
