title: Diversity of grassland bryophytes and effects of different managements methods
reg no: ETF5452
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.10-1.16. Bio-Geo Sciences
status: completed
institution: TU Faculty of Biology and Geography
head of project: Nele Ingerpuu
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2005
description: The part of bryophytes in the grassland structure and general diversity has been neglected in studies. There are no studies on the effect of different management methods on grassland bryophytes in the climatic conditions of Estonia.
The aims of the study are to find out 1) the biotic and abiotic factors influencing grassland bryophyte diversity, 2) the management methods needed to maintain and restore bryophyte diversity, 3) if the bryophyte diversity reacts to the change of environmental and management changes similarly and 4) what is needed to preserve rare grassland bryophyte species and communities.
The results of the study will give new theoretical aspects to the understanding of structural and functional rules in grassland plant communities. The results will also help to maintain and restore one of the main natural resources in Estonia - species richness.
