description: | The project is designed to continue and complete the research carried out with the support of former grants from the Estonian Science Foundation No 417 and No 1715 (1993-1995) "the Sale of Farms into Perpetuity in Estonia" and No 2083 (1996-1999) "The Genesis of the Peasant Land-ownership in Estonia 1800-1920". Although the results of the last-mentioned grant were evaluated as "excellent" the constant under-financing hindered completion of the research and preparing the manuscript of the monograph for publishing. There exist already databases on the farms bought into perpetuity in Pärnumaa and Viljandimaa as well as on private manors in Võrumaa (until 1889). Also the results of the above-mentioned grants have been published in various articles (the list of such publications is presented in CV-s). As the data collection has almost been finished and a number of more or less preliminary publications have been issued the completion of the research and the publication of the monograph will not be too time-consuming. Furthermore, the same themes are also explored by PhD student Kersti Lust in her master thesis and forthcoming doctoral dissertation as well as by MA student Katrin Kello in her bachelor thesis and master thesis. Both of them will be involved in the project. 1. quick publication of a web-based publication of the above-mentioned databases as well as of the monograph in German with a thorough summary in English (approximately 360 000 characters and tables in the form of a source publication; the analysis of the databases and the correction of any mistakes found in the databases. 2. contribution to the corpus of knowledge about peasant emancipation. The recent scholarship has done much to enable to widen both chronological and geographical boundaries of the research. Not only the nineteenth century but the whole period from the late seventeenth until the early twentieth century will be covered. The research will encompass the whole northern Livonia (including the island of Saaremaa). Much more attention is going to be focused on the problem of peasant land-ownership on state estates (ca one fourth of all agricultural land belonged to them). In the framework of the former projects we have managed to compare and integrate our preliminary research results and conclusions with those of historians on Central European peasants' emancipation. |
