description: | 1) to determine when and under what circumstances the Baltic question reached the institutions and leading persons dealing with foreign relations as being a separate problem, independent of Russia. Did and in what extend USA take over the previous position of UK in the Baltic States? Did Estonia really follow so called foreign policy orientation to Britain instead of following and estimating the general values of democratic society as it argued by some soviet historians? 2) to ascertain to what extent the development of relations between the two superpowers in turn influenced the change in the international status of the Baltic States in the XX century. In the United States as in Europe, the Baltic States were often seen as an integral whole. An objective of this research would be to determine how different problems of the Baltic States were reflected in Washington and in London and, if possible, specify the role of the responses to the problems in guiding the foreign policy of the Baltic States. UK did not deny the possibility of official recognition of the annexation of the Baltic States by Soviet Russia. The member of Commonwealth - Australia even did it for a while. The non-recognition of the occupation of the Baltic States by the USA, and following their example, other Western countries, guaranteed their later restored independence. How did the previous development of relations between the Baltic States and the USA influence that decision? 3) some researches have published articles on the increasing misunderstanding or even rising conflicts between Europe and USA. They are arguing that the foreign policy of the USA and European states base on the completely different principles. Could those possible conflicts influence the security situations of the Estonia in the near future? One of the main aims of foreign policy of Estonia is associate of EU where even UK does criticize USA in some occasions. On the other hand Estonia is eager to get invitation for ally of NATO where USA is one of the dominating power. |
