title: Species and typological diversity of the Estonian floodplain and hillock forests and the factors determinin¿g them
reg no: ETF5494
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.10-1.16. Bio-Geo Sciences
status: accepted
institution: TU Faculty of Biology and Geography
head of project: Jaanus Paal
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2006
description: The main aims are: 1. to ascertain the current distribution and natural state of the maintained floodplain forests and meso-eutrophic boreo-nemoral hillock forests in Estonia; 2. to study the diversity rate of vascular plants and bryophytes in these two forest site type groups on the synusia as well as on the community levels; 3. to clarify the relationship between the different parameters (species composition and abundancy, forest taxation variables) in forests of these two site type groups and habitat soil and moisture conditions; 4. to study how the substrates nessesary for growing of lichens in floodplain forests are distributed and what is their influence on lichen flora; 5. to study how the epiphytic lichens and bryophytes growing on the foot and lower part of tree stems are influenced by the floodplain forests moisture regime; 6. to ascertain the successional processes of floodplain forests in Estonian conditions (changes in the structure of tree layer and undergrowth, distribution and representation of lichen substrates and the influence of them on the lichen species diversity).
Project output: 1. Scientific papers summarizing the results; 2. PhD thesis of I. Jüriado and E.-M. Jeletsky; 3. Collecting of basic data for improvement of the Estonian forest site type orcination and classification system.
