title: The magnetic age of the Estonian sedimentary cover
reg no: ETF5500
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.10-1.16. Bio-Geo Sciences
status: completed
institution: TU Faculty of Biology and Geography
head of project: Jüri Plado
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2005
description: The present application is to investigate the distribution and time of formation of magnetic minerals in the Estonian sedimentary cover. It gives possibilities to estimate the ages of sedimentation and mineralogical transformations (e.g. dolomitization). The main goals are:'

i) using the Estonian sedimentary rocks to adjust the paleoposition, path, and speed of the Baltica microcontinent during the Cambrian-Ordovician Periods,
(ii) to determine the age of dolomitization of the Estonian carbonate sequence, and to associate that with the causative regional geological processes,
(iii) to investigate the magnetic response of estolites (the microscopic magnetic material formed during the meteorite impact) to the temperature and the surrounding magnetic field. It is to illustrate their conditions of formation and their influence into the whole-rock magnetization.

As a main result of the project the position of the Baltica continent in Cambrian-Ordovicial will be adjusted. Also, the post-sedimentational processes that had an influence to the magnetization of rocks will be described. The research will add new aspects into the investigations of Estonian dolomites and their bulk pertophysical properties. Research under this project is closely related to the teaching both on the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
