title: Ultrasonographically assessed carotid artery morphology and risk of coronary heart disease - population-based study in healthy middle-aged Estonians
reg no: ETF5507
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 3. Medical Sciences
status: accepted
institution: Clinicum of Tartu University
head of project: Tiina Ristimäe
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2006
description: The aim of the present study is to investigate the interrelationships of several known and novel cardiovascular risk markers on early stages of atherosclerosis in a group of healthy middle-aged Estonians (age > 40 years), as reflected by ultrasound measurements of the common carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and noninvasive measures of arterial stiffness.

Expected results.
(1) Development of integrated approach for cardiovascular prevention among Estonians > 40 years of age
(2) Verification of important parameters for quantification of early-stage atherosclerosis among middle-aged Estonians by means of complex estimation of cardiovascular risk profile
(3) Improved assessment of cardiovascular risk with detection of novel modifyable risk factors
(4) Detection of the high-risk middle-aged subpopulation for aggressive cardiovascular prevention.
