description: The project Urbanisation and Internal migration in Estonia during the transition period has two main objectives. First, it aims to clarify internal migration trends and causes in Estonia during the transition period. This is needed due to the low quality of annual migration statistics collected in the 1990s. Second aim of the project is to analyse internal migration by population sub-groups. The study is based on the concept of differential urbanisation that best generalises the sequence of spatial population change, migration of population sub-groups and motives of migration.

Data for the project comes from Census 2000 and Estonian Labour Force Survey 2002. The first stage of the study will describe internal migration flows in Estonia in 1989-2000 (1) on urban-rural scale; (2) in the settlement system (3) within urban regions and (4) in the counties of Estonia, focusing on processes of urbanisation, sub-urbanisation and counter-urbanisation. The second stage of the study will analyse internal migration by population sub-groups, using multivariate research methods.

The results of the study clarify the trends of internal migration that is the weakest part of population data system in Estonia today. Also, the study broadens our understand of what happens with internal migration in a country that experienced a fairly typical pattern of migration of native and immigrant population during the Soviet period, and on which there have been applied very thorough political and economic reforms during the transition period.
