description: Emerging antibiotic resistance has been reported among community-acquired pathogens such as S.pneumoniae and H.influenzae in all over the world .These bacteria carried in the nasopharynx of children reflect the strains currently circulating community and causing respiratory and invasive infections . The study aims are :
To evaluate the nasopharyngial carriage of S.pneumoniae and H.influenzae and to determine the antimicrobial resistance rate of these bacteria .
To detect the distribution of S.pneumoniae serotypes and prevalence of group B H.influenzae .
To examine the differences between the towns in total usage and in the use of different antibiotics and the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant S.pneumoniae and H.influenzae .
To test the hypothesis , that the frequency of penicillin-resistant S.pneumoniae in children ages 2 to 6
years is positively correlated to the utilization of antibiotics at a population level .
To compare the resistance data and antibiotic consumption of the years 1999/2000 and 2003 .

Results of our study are important for elaboration of local antibiotic therapy guidlines .
Information about the distribution of different pneumococcal serotypes helps as to evaluate the
possible effectiveness of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in estonian children .
