description: Plant macrofossil analyses is one of the most useful biostratigraphical methods for the reconstruction of former lake-level changes. The distribution of submerged, floating leaved and emergent lake-shore vegetation is mainly dependant on water depth, but water chemistry and nutrient status must also be taken into account. Plant remains (like seeds, fruits, bud scales, oospores of the charophytes etc) are identifiable to genus that enables to find out more precisely the preferred habitats of the species.

For strengthening and refining the interpretation of fossil records we need additional studies of the plant-macrofossil/water-depth relationships in different types of lakes. Therefore investigations on the distribution of the plant macrofossils in dependance with the present macrophyte vegetation are planned. Also lakes with the known water-level changes and fixed macrophyte distribution will be chosen for the investigations.

Lake -level studies will be based on the investigation of several littoral cores along a transect perpendicular to the lake shore. For the correlation of the sediment cores pollen stratigraphy and different dating methods will be used.
