description: | The main goal of the project is to conduct and inter-disciplinary study of the sub-cultures of the Estonian Russians, Old Believers and other non-Estonians in East-Virumaa and Lake Peipsi region based on ethnological and sociological fieldwork, data analysis and archive sources. The research would cover the period from 1940 to 2005 and would also take into account the Estonians living in the region. The objective is to investigate the everyday life, mentality, religion and other cultural aspects of people from different sub-cultures and nations, as well as the cultural changes in the Soviet Estonia compared to today's world, and the role of non-Estonians in the process of sovietization. Publishing: the collection of presentations of the inter-disciplinary international scientific conference "Estonian Russian, Old-Believers', Setus' and Estonian Cultures in Eastern Estonia" will be published in "Pro Ethnologia" and in "ERM Aastaraamat" (Yearbook of the Estonian National Museum). We are planning to issue three monographic works: J. Plaat "Religious Life in East-Virumaa and Lake Peipsi Region 1940-2005: a Comparison with the rest of Estonia", R. Reinvelt "'Estonian' and 'Russian' in the Everyday Life and Mentality of the Estonian Russians" (PhD thesis), O.Mertelsmann "Die Sowjetisierung der estnischen Gesellschaft 1940-1956"/"Sovietization of the Estonian Society, 1940-1956" (work of habilitation); and publish individual articles by scientists and students participating in the project, and two questionnaires (the help of correspondents of the Estonian National Museum will also be used). Material collected during the fieldwork will be also used in students' seminar papers and master theses. The goal is also to collect objects, archive material, photos and audio-visual material for the ERM collection during fieldwork. An exhibition "Non-Estonian Cultures in Eastern Estonia" based on these items will be set up. Two movies will be produced out of the audio-visual material filmed during fieldwork. One is about Eastern Estonian religious movements and the other is about different cultures in East-Virumaa and in the Lake Peipsi region. The results of the research will also be compared with the work in the same region by Russian colleagues from the Russian Ethnographic Museum. |
