title: Semi-empirical modelling of underwater light field and primary production in Estonian lakes
reg no: ETF5594
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.10-1.16. Bio-Geo Sciences
status: accepted
institution: TTU Marine Systems Institute
head of project: Helgi Arst
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2006
description: The aim of the present project is: 1) Using a seni-empirical radiation model to determine the temporal and spatial variation of underwater irradiance (including quantum irradiance) in several Estonian lakes during ice-free period of 2003-2005. Relying on in situ measurements to test the suitability of the model for very turbid lakes. 2) On the basis of physical grounds, and using in situ measurements and statistical methods to elaborate a suitable for Estonian lakes (to begin with Lakes Võrtsjärv, Peipsi and Ülemiste) primary production model. 3) To estimate the capability and advantages of both models for prognosis of the underwater light field and primary production.

As a result of this project a calculation system and database for quantitative description of the variability of underwater light field, including daily, monthly etc. sums of energy will be accomplished. These materials could be necessary for investigation and prognosis of the underwater light regime as well as the bottom flora. System of empirical relationships based on regression equations relating light-to-photosynthesis parameters of phytoplankton ith environmental variables and phytoplankton species composition in the lakes give a chance to predict the productivity in conditions of rapid change of water quality. The results of this project (models, computing systems) can be used in the complex projects, connecting the studies in the field of atmospheric physics, marine dynamics, underwater optics and marine biology.
