title: Handling of excess activated sludge: Production of activated carbon for wastewater treatment
reg no: ETF5607
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 2.6. Chemical Engineering
status: completed
institution: TTU Faculty of Chemistry and Materials Technology
head of project: Juha Kallas
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2005
description: The main aim of the grant is to elaborate the economically beneficial method for application of activated carbon produced from secondary raw material in biological treatment wastewater, tertiary treatment and closing of water cycle.

The experimental studies can be divided into three groups. First, production of activated carbon from different raw materials at different conditions; testing and comparison of the produced AC properties. Secondly, application of produced AC in wastewater aerobic biological treatment as addition; determination of the influence of AC adding on the process efficiency and and dewatering of the excess activated sludge. The factors influencing the wastewater treatment efficiency and the AC properties to be established at this stage of research are the dose of AC for introduction to aerobic treatment, the ratio between the mill wastewater and the municipal sewage and AC production and activation parameters. And thirdly, testing of the adsorption and catalytic properties of AC produced from the excess sludge, at following applications: adsorption of organic impurities from aqueous solutions (application to the tertiary treatment of waste water discharge); application together with ozonation in biological wastewater treatment (catalytic properties of AC, removal of extractives from re-cycling water); wet air oxidation of concentrated liquid wastes (catalytic properties in wet oxidation ).

In the theoretical part of the project, the adsorption equilibrium parameters are evaluated and breakthrough curves are computed. Also the mathematical models of unit processes used in experiments - aerobic bio-oxidation and AC adsorption - are composed, obtaining the basis for study the influence of activated carbon on combined processes.

The results of the research can be applied in wastewater biological purification for utilisation of excess activated sludge and for improvement of discharge quality.
