title: Ionic liquids as new type of solvents
reg no: ETF5610
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 1.6-1.9. Chemistry and Molecular Biology
status: completed
institution: TTU Faculty of Science
head of project: Mihkel Koel
duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2005
description: Hypothesis is formulated: with a autonomous choice of anion and cation in the ionic composition of ionic liquid, which influence different properties, it is possible to optimize the properties of solvent.
In the same time there is a need for better understanding on molecular level the processes in this media and compare with processes in conventional media.
Main objectives of present study are:
Measure the physical properties (density, viscosity, refractive index, solubility, etc) of new synthesized alkylimidazolium based ionic liquids and search for correlations in interactions with other materials.
Estimate the properties of ionic liquid as a solvent - study the solvent polarity. Compare this with traditional solvents and study the possibility of tuning the polarity of the solvent with choice of anion and modification of alkylimidazolium cation. Gas chromatography with ionic liquid as stationary phase and adsorption spectroscopy to measure solvatochromic effects will be used as tools for this kind of studies for characterization of ionic liquids.
Also the solvent systems, where one component is ionic liquid, will be studied, to estimate the potential for recycling and effective separation reagents and reaction products.
