title: Measurement methods of industrial and mobile noise sources and development of measurement set-up
reg no: ETF5622
project type: Estonian Science Foundation research grant
subject: 2.10. Mechanical Engineering
status: completed

duration: 01.01.2003 - 31.12.2004
description: Despite of continuing research and development the annoying noise problems have not disappeared. There are number of reasons for the situation. First, the number of machines around is increasing constantly and consequently also summarized noise level. Second, machines become more and more powerful which means also more acoustic power. Third, the noise regulations become more strict and people tolerant noise less and less.Because of the developing Estonian economy and joining EU regulations, there are more poblems with the noise level of old equipment but sometimes also with the new produced machines in Estonia. They are mainly stationary equipment (IC engines, pumps, compressors, fans etc) and vehicles (cars, lorries, trains, vessels).Despite of progress made in modelling of noise sources, the precise measurement procedures are the main tools for noise research. Modern measurement procedures assume quite rigorous measurement set up. In additon to the noise level recording, the data characterizing machine operating conditions, atmospheric conditions etc must be recorded concurrently. Usually the measurement set up is based on computerized teqnique. The current proposal is intended to develop the acoustic measurement method and measurement set up for typical machines and measurement situations. The set up is based on PC, application programs will be written by using MatLab and LabView
